N1 is no longer just a single-patient demo. Neuralink's January 2026 update says 21 participants are now enrolled in trials worldwide, up from the three implanted users it described a year earlier. That's the first number that makes the program look like an engineering system instead of a publicity artifact. What matters isn't just enrollment. Neuralink says multiple participants are already operating in the 8-10 bits-per-second range typical of able-bodied mouse use, and Nick reportedly exceeded 10 BPS within his first week. Another participant, Sebastian, is using Telepathy for up to 17 hours a day while studying medicine. Those are usage metrics, not stage demos. I'm still skeptical about long-term durability, explant risk, and how well robotic-limb control will generalize outside guided settings. But the signal is clear: the bottleneck is shifting from "can a human control a cursor?" to decoder stability, comfort, and everyday software integration. That's real progress.
