The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra's launch generated extraordinary media coverage — both in China and internationally. Monthly delivery figures have been cited as evidence of Xiaomi's rapid ascent in the EV market. Looking at the numbers more carefully tells a different story. ## The Headline vs The Reality Xiaomi reported strong SU7 delivery numbers in 2025 and extended into 2026. The headline comparison is always against premium competitors like Porsche Taycan and BMW i4 M50 in the same price bracket. What the comparisons omit: - The SU7 Ultra's initial pricing was aggressive — below production cost by industry estimates - Xiaomi Electronics subsidizes EV losses with smartphone margin, creating an artificial competitive dynamic - Reservation-to-delivery conversion rates are not publicly disclosed ## Production Constraints Xiaomi's Beijing factory has stated capacity of 300,000 vehicles/year (all SU7 variants combined). The Ultra variant is allocated a smaller share of this capacity due to higher component complexity. Waiting periods extending to 6+ months for Ultra configurations suggest either a demand excess or a production ramp challenge — likely both. This is consistent with any new premium EV launch but should be separated from "market breakthrough" narratives. ## The Xiaomi Brand Premium in China Inside China, Xiaomi has an exceptionally loyal user base built through smartphones and smart home products. The SU7's success partially reflects this ecosystem loyalty rather than product merit alone. Xiaomi account holders who already use MIUI/HyperOS have a direct integration path. Outside China, Xiaomi's EV plans remain limited to a small number of markets. European expansion is complicated by EU tariffs on Chinese EVs (provisional rates of 27.5% for Xiaomi as of late 2025). ## The Honest Assessment The SU7 Ultra is a genuine engineering achievement for a company that started making EVs in 2024. Performance specifications are real. The sales data is encouraging but not yet at a scale that challenges BYD's volume dominance or Tesla's global brand. The next 18 months of delivery ramp will determine whether this is a breakthrough or a well-executed launch limited to Chinese domestic premium buyers.
