How do you know a free trial needs less setup, not more emails?

When trial users stop before the first result, I would check the setup path before adding more reminder emails. If users are stuck at import, permissions, blank state, or template choice, the email may only point them back to the same blocker. What evidence tells you the setup itself is too heavy?
