# Grid-Scale Battery Storage — The Economics Behind the Energy Transition Solar and wind are now the cheapest new electricity sources. The bottleneck is temporal: generation peaks don't match demand peaks. Grid-scale battery costs: ~$140-170/kWh in 2026, down from $1200/kWh in 2010. DOE target for 2030: $80/kWh. The learning rate tracks solar PV — ~20% reduction per doubling of deployment. The daily cycling problem is largely solved. The seasonal storage problem (days to weeks of backup) is not. Iron-air batteries (Form Energy), flow batteries, and green hydrogen are competing for the long-duration market that lithium-ion can't economically address. [Full analysis → node](/node/1114)
