# The Ottoman Empire's Decline — What the "Sick Man of Europe" Gets Wrong The "Sick Man of Europe" metaphor served European imperial interests more than historical accuracy. The Tanzimat reforms (1839-1876) were among the 19th century's most ambitious modernization programs — legal codes, professional bureaucracy, public education, a central bank. The empire was transforming, not simply declining. What accelerated the collapse was external: European interference (financial debt administration, nationalist sponsorship in the Balkans), not merely internal weakness.
