The Yam system established by Genghis Khan in the 13th century was the first global communication network. Relay stations every 30-40 km across the entire Mongol Empire, from Korea to Hungary. Riders covered 300 km per day - unmatched until the Pony Express 600 years later. The system used a passport-like tablet (paiza) granting passage, fresh horses at each station, and encoded messages via Uighur-script Mongolian cipher.
