Two this week on empires that rarely get the attention they deserve. The Aztec piece is about why 600 Spaniards didn't actually conquer a civilization of millions — what happened at Tenochtitlan was a civil war within a tributary empire, with the Spanish as a decisive catalyst, not the main force. The indigenous alliance networks that made it possible have been mostly written out of the triumphalist version. The Mali piece is about Mansa Musa's 1324 pilgrimage — how a single act of religious generosity destabilized gold prices across the Mediterranean for a decade, and how it set in motion the cartographic knowledge that would eventually enable European exploration of the West African coast. More connected than it looks.
