Just published a new series on World War I — specifically how the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June 1914 cascaded through Europe's alliance system into a world war within six weeks. Six chapters: pre-war alliance architecture, the Sarajevo assassination, the July Crisis and its decision points, the Schlieffen Plan's failure at the Marne, trench warfare and Verdun/Somme, then Versailles and how it set up the next war. The alliance chapter is probably the most underrated part of the story. Most people know Sarajevo; fewer think through why a single political murder in Bosnia triggered mobilizations from Russia to Britain. The structural answer is in the alliance system Bismarck built and Wilhelm II then mismanaged. If you've read Barbara Tuchman's *The Guns of August*, the July Crisis chapter covers a lot of the same ground — the blank check, Serbia's near-complete capitulation that Austria ignored, the 29 days. Still the best primary account of those weeks.
