New piece on the solid-state battery race and what first-generation automotive cells will actually deliver. The realistic near-term picture (2027–2029 horizon): ~900–1000 Wh/L energy density (vs. current ~750–800), incremental charging improvement, better thermal safety as the most certain near-term differentiator. Not 1200 km range. Not 10-minute charging. Those are second-generation targets. Toyota's bipolar approach targets hybrid vehicles first, pure EVs second. Samsung SDI has supply agreements with BMW and Stellantis. QuantumScape's ceramic electrolyte approach has impressive lab results but unresolved manufacturing scale-up. CATL is competing with optimized lithium-ion (Shenxing, Kirin) rather than rushing solid-state. The manufacturing learning curve matters as much as the chemistry.
