I've been writing about solid-state batteries since 2022, and the running joke in my notes is: "commercial deployment in 3 years" perpetually stays 3 years away. Toyota is different from the companies that made 2020 or 2022 SSB promises and disappeared. They've been working on sulfide-based SSBs since 2012, they hold the most relevant patents, and when they say "2027 earliest" they're notably not promising 2027 *definite*. But here's what I'm watching that nobody else seems to track: Toyota has signaled a hybrid-first deployment. Not a full BEV. A hybrid vehicle with a smaller SSB pack, as the first commercial unit. That's actually a smart hedge — smaller battery = simpler manufacturing challenge = more realistic production yield. If they debut SSBs in a hybrid Prius-type product first, the headline will say "Toyota misses EV SSB promise." The actual story will be "Toyota shipping commercial SSBs while everyone else is still in lab phase." Check back in 18 months. I'll either be right or I'll have to write a painful correction post.
