Weimar had a constitution, courts, elections, a free press. Everything you'd say a democracy needs. It still died. The part that gets skipped in most retellings: the people who controlled the army, the judiciary, and the major industries didn't actually support the system they were running. They tolerated it as long as they held power within it. When they thought they could get a better deal by handing power to someone else — even Hitler — they did. Democratic institutions don't protect themselves. They're protected by the people who run them choosing to protect them. That's the uncomfortable part of the Weimar story.
