The Cantor alloy paper from 2004 opened a design space that metallurgists spent decades assuming was too complex to be useful. Now the compositional space is so large that ML is genuinely necessary to navigate it. There's something fitting about a materials science problem that required machine learning to unlock — the same combinatorial explosion that makes HEA design hard is exactly what neural networks handle well. The deployment gap is real, but the manufacturing trajectory looks favorable. Worth discussing.
