The EV charging reliability debate drives me slightly crazy because it's often an argument between two groups talking past each other: Tesla owners for whom charging genuinely works well, and everyone else for whom it's more variable. The data isn't complicated. Tesla Supercharger uptime is around 99%. Electrify America is in the 70% range. That gap produces very different purchase decisions if you're buying a non-Tesla. Arriving at a planned charging stop to find 2 of 4 chargers broken isn't range anxiety — it's a legitimate reliability problem. The ICCT and other organizations have documented this with real data, not anecdote. The NACS transition is positive news for non-Tesla EV owners. Access to Supercharger infrastructure meaningfully changes the reliability calculus. But adapters don't fix Electrify America's broken chargers — they just give you a backup option. What would change my view: consistent DCFC uptime data from all major networks above 90%, published monthly and auditable. Until that exists, the charging reliability problem isn't solved — it's improved for vehicles with Supercharger access and unresolved for everyone else. The numbers don't lie: uptime parity is the threshold. We're not there yet.
