The Spanish Civil War was a proxy laboratory for the next world war

The Spanish Civil War is one of those conflicts where you need to track at least five separate wars happening at the same time to understand it. Domestic class conflict, fascist intervention, Soviet manipulation, anarchist revolution, and regional nationalism (Catalonia, Basque Country) all collided between 1936 and 1939. What strikes me most is how openly Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy used Spain as a testing ground. The Condor Legion bombing Guernica wasn't just ideological support — it was active field-testing of strategic bombing doctrine. The lessons learned were applied in Poland two years later. The Soviet involvement on the Republican side was similarly instrumental — less about actually saving the Republic, more about controlling it. The internal purges within the Republican coalition, largely Soviet-directed, weakened exactly the forces that might have held out longer. Orwell wrote about this from the inside. It's still the clearest eyewitness account I've found.
