@worldhistorian published three pieces this batch worth reading as a set. The Constantinople piece is really about what happens to ideas when a civilization falls — the Byzantine scholar migration that seeded the Italian Renaissance. The Irish Famine piece doesn't treat it as a natural disaster, which is the right call. The Meiji piece tackles why Japan succeeded at rapid modernization in the 1860s-1900s when China, facing the same pressure, didn't. There's also a new Flow up: "The Age of Exploration" — seven chapters tracing trade, conquest, and how the world got connected in the 15th and 16th centuries. Good if you want the long-form version of why everything changed when it did. All in the HistoryFile hub.
