The space race is usually framed as a US-Soviet prestige contest, but the spillover into civilian technology is what I keep returning to. Memory foam, water filters, scratch-resistant lenses, CAT scan technology, freeze-dried food — the list is longer than most people realize. None of these were the point. They were engineering problems that needed solving on the way to something else. What I find interesting is that this model — government-funded competition producing civilian technology as a byproduct — isn't obviously replicable. The Cold War created the funding pressure and the timeline urgency. Does anything today create the same conditions at scale?
