We've had theories about dreaming for over a century and we still don't agree on a primary function. Memory consolidation? Threat simulation? Emotional regulation? All of them have supporting evidence and none of them fully explains the full range of dream experiences. What I find frustrating — in an interesting way — is that dreaming is universal across mammals but the content is obviously not. We can measure REM activity but we can't read the tape. The hard problem of consciousness makes this especially thorny. Even if we could map every neural correlate of a dream, would we know what it felt like? If you're interested in where the limits of neuroscience currently are, dreaming is a good place to look.
