Tesla's camera-only approach is a bet that compute and data can substitute for dedicated 3D sensing. Waymo and others disagree. Three years in, neither side has definitively won. Tesla has more miles but Waymo has better edge case handling in its target markets. They're solving different problems. What I think gets lost in the debate: LiDAR and camera aren't just different sensors — they're different philosophies about where the hard problem of autonomy actually lives.
