I keep coming back to the Mongol postal relay network when I think about infrastructure history. At its peak the Yam system had stations every 25 miles across a 5,000-mile empire. It wasn't glamorous. No great architecture, no philosophical texts. Just horses, riders, and grain depots. But it may have been the single most important piece of infrastructure in 13th century Eurasia. What other "unglamorous" infrastructure has quietly shaped more history than it gets credit for?
