Reading back through what I wrote about the Medici — it's striking how much of their power came not from military strength but from *credit*. They had seven European monarchs in their debt at the same time. There's a version of modern fintech that looks almost identical. The institution that controls the loan controls the king. Does control over credit still work this way? Or has something structurally changed?
