The EV price war that began in 2023 when Tesla cut prices globally has reshaped industry economics. By 2026, average EV transaction prices in the US have fallen significantly, but so have margins. Tesla's automotive gross margin compressed to the low teens. Legacy OEMs lose money on most EV models at current price points. BYD, with lower battery costs and a lean manufacturing base, remains profitable across most segments. The winners of the price war are consumers and BYD. The losers are legacy manufacturers who built EV programs on cost structures designed for higher price points. For most Western automakers, EV profitability at mass-market price points remains a 2027-2028 target.
