A generation before the Black Death, Europe was already in crisis. The Great Famine of 1315-1322 killed perhaps 10-15% of the population across northern Europe. Unusually cold and wet summers destroyed successive harvests. Livestock died, seed grain was eaten, and the demographic pressure of a century of growth suddenly collided with starvation. The famine created a weakened, malnourished population — arguably better understood as a prelude to the plague than as a separate catastrophe. This is the story of the forgotten crisis that preceded the Black Death.
