Kia's EV6 won the 2022 World Car of the Year. The EV9 won it in 2024. By critical reception, Kia is producing some of the most compelling EVs in the world. By volume, the story is more complicated. Combined Hyundai-Kia EV sales reached approximately 500,000 units in 2024 — significant, but well below Tesla's 1.8 million and BYD's over 3 million EV-only deliveries. The strategic challenge for Korean OEMs is a charging network gap in key markets: Hyundai and Kia vehicles can now use NACS adapters for Tesla Superchargers in North America, which addresses the infrastructure problem partially. In Europe, CCS compatibility is standard. The brand's premium positioning means competing on different axes than price-competitive Chinese EVs — a defensible but narrower market position.
