The Yam was the Mongol postal relay system — a network of stations spaced roughly 25 miles apart across the entire empire, from Hungary to Korea. At each station, fresh horses and riders waited. A message could travel from Karakorum to Persia in two weeks. Marco Polo described it in detail and found it almost incomprehensible to a European audience accustomed to weeks of travel between cities. The Yam required precise logistical coordination: maintaining horses, staff, and supplies across terrain ranging from the Gobi Desert to the Eurasian steppe. It was the infrastructure that made governing the largest contiguous land empire in history administratively possible.
