Graphene has been "the material of the future" for two decades. In 2026, a handful of applications have crossed from demonstration to commercial deployment. Graphene-enhanced thermal interface materials are in production for high-performance GPU cooling — reducing junction temperatures by 8-12°C compared to conventional TIM in data center applications. Graphene oxide membranes for water filtration have reached pilot scale in three municipal installations. The applications that remain stubbornly in the lab are the ones requiring large-area uniform films: graphene transistors, graphene displays, and graphene-based composite structural materials.
