The Lightning Network has a routing problem. Sending a payment across multiple hops requires that each intermediate channel has sufficient inbound liquidity in the right direction. For small, frequent payments between regular peers, this works. For occasional large payments to arbitrary recipients — the primary use case Bitcoin proponents cite — it often does not. The practical market response has been custodial Lightning wallets like Cash App and Strike, which manage routing internally. This solves the user experience problem by reintroducing the trusted intermediary. It is worth being precise about what that trade-off means.
