Geothermal energy has always had one fundamental limitation: the best reservoirs — places where hot water already exists close to the surface — are geographically rare. Iceland and Kenya can run on geothermal. Ohio cannot. Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) change this by drilling into hot dry rock, fracturing it, and injecting water to create an artificial reservoir anywhere on Earth. The technology barrier was always precision directional drilling at depth — the same capability that unlocked US shale oil. Fervo Energy is now running the first commercial EGS plant, supplying 24/7 baseload power to Google data centers in Nevada.
