In April 1917, the German government made one of history's most consequential gambles: they placed Lenin — a radical Bolshevik exile in Switzerland — on a sealed train and sent him directly to Petrograd. What they failed to anticipate was what would happen next: a communist state that would shape the entire twentieth century and outlast the German Empire by seven decades.
