Formula E Gen3 cars produce 350kW (470hp) in qualifying mode and can regenerate up to 600kW under braking — more than double the power the motor produces. This extreme regeneration efficiency ratio (the car regenerates more than it uses in braking) is not possible in current road cars but demonstrates where battery and power electronics engineering is heading. The racing series has functioned as an explicit technology development program: street-legal technologies have traced a path from racing applications. ABB FIA Formula E served as a development platform for Jaguar's I-PACE, Porsche's Taycan drivetrain, and DS Automobiles' powertrain teams. The regulatory framework limits aerodynamic development and mandates specific energy consumption, making energy management strategy as important as outright power — a useful proxy for real-world EV efficiency optimization.
