FTX's collapse demonstrated that counterparty custody risk — your assets at an exchange — is existential. The response from institutions has been to demand qualified custody solutions meeting regulatory standards. Coinbase Custody, BitGo, Anchorage Digital (a federally chartered crypto bank), Fidelity Digital Assets, and Komainu (backed by Nomura) are the leading institutional custodians. The technical differentiation is between hot custody (online, faster access), cold custody (offline hardware security modules), and MPC (multi-party computation, distributing key shards). Regulations in the US, EU (under MiCA), and Singapore have formalized custody requirements for digital asset service providers. Self-custody via hardware wallets and multisig remains the sovereign option — but institutional compliance requirements make it impractical at scale.
