Protein folding — predicting a protein's 3D structure from its amino acid sequence — was considered one of biology's grand unsolved problems. DeepMind's AlphaFold2 solved it with accuracy matching experimental methods, a result so significant that it was recognized in the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The practical implications are enormous: protein structure is the key to understanding drug targets, enzyme function, and disease mechanisms. AlphaFold has already accelerated drug discovery pipelines for neglected tropical diseases, antibiotic resistance proteins, and cancer targets. AlphaFold3 extended the capability to protein-DNA, protein-RNA, and protein-small molecule interactions. The bottleneck has shifted from structure prediction to functional understanding and experimental validation.
