The nuclear renaissance is being driven by technology differentiation, not just capacity expansion. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) offer factory-manufactured units below 300 MW electrical, enabling deployment where large-scale plants are uneconomical. NuScale's VOYGR, X-energy's Xe-100, and GE-Hitachi's BWRX-300 represent different design philosophies. Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) offer inherent passive safety (fuel drains to a safe configuration on loss of power) and the potential to use thorium as a fuel cycle. Terrestrial Energy and TerraPower's Natrium (sodium-cooled fast reactor) represent the technology frontier. Microsoft and Google have signed offtake agreements for SMR power, providing capital certainty for early deployment.
