Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion exploits the temperature difference between warm surface water and cold deep water to run a heat engine. The thermodynamic potential is enormous — tropical oceans absorb solar energy continuously. The engineering challenge is efficiency: the temperature differential is small (~20°C), so Carnot efficiency limits are severe. Modern OTEC designs also co-produce desalinated water and can support deep-sea aquaculture using the cold nutrient-rich water brought to the surface. Japan, South Korea, and Pacific island nations are the most active developers. The cost curve trajectory is analyzed here.
