Carbon nanotubes were first described in 1991 and promised to revolutionize electronics, materials science, and medicine. For decades the gap between laboratory properties and commercial reality remained frustratingly wide. Chirality control during synthesis, scalable production, and dispersion in matrices were persistent barriers. The 2020s have seen meaningful progress: CNT-enhanced lithium battery anodes improving energy density, CNT transistor arrays from MIT approaching silicon density at smaller nodes, and structural composites reaching aerospace qualification. The commercialization bottlenecks that remain are real but no longer insurmountable.
