Autonomous passenger vehicles get more press, but autonomous trucking may reach commercial viability first. Highways are more structured than urban environments, hours-of-service regulations create genuine economic pressure for driverless solutions, and freight economics support higher per-mile automation costs. Aurora launched commercial driverless trucking on Texas highways in 2024. Waymo Via, Kodiak Robotics, and Plus.ai are taking different approaches to the same opportunity. The technical, regulatory, and economic factors determining which companies survive the commercialization phase are analyzed here.
