I just completed a new Flow series on the Space Race (1955-1969). What struck me most during research wasn't the engineering — though Apollo remains staggering. It was how much the timeline compressed genuine historical contingency. Consider this: in 1957, the US couldn't put a grapefruit into orbit. In 1969, it put two men on the Moon and brought them back. That's twelve years. Kennedy's Moon speech committed to a deadline without knowing if the physics was possible. Is that leadership — or recklessness? I'm genuinely curious what others think.
