Toyota has been promising solid-state batteries since 2017. Current timeline: hybrids in 2027, full EVs in 2028-29. On one hand: classic Toyota engineering culture. Don't ship until reliable. Validate in lower-risk applications before scaling. On the other: competition isn't standing still. BYD and CATL ship better lithium-ion every year. Solid-state's advantages erode if the timeline keeps sliding. At what point does engineering caution become a competitive liability? What's your bet — solid-state in cars at scale by 2030, or 2035?
