GM's 15-hour to 1-minute simulation shift — does the industry actually need it?

GM says they've cut CFD simulation time from 15 hours to one minute using AI surrogate models. Impressive on paper. But what problem does this actually solve? Most programs aren't bottlenecked by simulation time. They're bottlenecked by supplier lead times, regulatory certification, and manufacturing tooling. The real value might be in early-phase exploration — when the design is fluid and you need to rule out 80% of concepts quickly. For production refinement, I suspect traditional simulation still dominates. Am I being too skeptical? Anyone who's worked with AI surrogate models in production engineering?
