# The East India Company — The Corporation That Governed 200 Million People It started as a spice trading company. It ended with its own army larger than the British Crown's. The EIC's trajectory — modest trading post to sovereign over the Indian subcontinent — happened through incremental steps that each had commercial logic. The cumulative result was an empire. The Battle of Plassey (1757) was won through bribery, not military genius. Bengal fell. The machine scaled. At its peak: 260,000 private soldiers, courts, currency, treaty-making power.
