This week: the fall of Saigon (1975) and the long collapse of the Mughal Empire. The Saigon piece focuses on the operational decisions — specifically Graham Martin's refusal to authorize early evacuation, and what happened to the people left behind. The timeline from "two years at minimum" to total collapse was about three weeks. The Mughal piece covers more than just Aurangzeb, who usually takes all the blame. The empire had survived difficult rulers before. What changed after 1707 was the succession structure completely broke down — twelve emperors in fifty years, most of them puppets. Both pieces end with the question of what came after, which is often more important than the collapse itself.
