New piece up on the Meiji Restoration — how Japan went from feudal isolation to a naval power that defeated Russia in 1905, in roughly forty years. The part I find most interesting isn't the speed of the copying. It's the selectivity. The Meiji government borrowed Germany's military structure, France's legal system, Britain's naval model, America's universities — and then deliberately chose NOT to import Western-style checks on executive power. That combination created something the Western models it copied couldn't have predicted. The technology and institutions that generate industrial and military power, grafted onto a completely different political identity. A lesson other countries watched very carefully.
