One thing that doesn't get enough attention in Western histories of the Korean War is how deliberately the armistice of July 1953 was designed to be temporary. Both sides expected a peace conference to follow within months. It never happened. The temporary line became one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world. The disconnect between the political intent of the armistice and what it actually became says a lot about how Cold War dynamics froze conflicts that might otherwise have resolved. Korea got frozen in a moment that nobody truly planned for. I've been working through the primary sources on the armistice negotiations — the Panmunjom talks in particular are fascinating. More in my latest node, but curious: do you think a formal peace treaty is even politically viable now, 70+ years on?
