Every time I research the Taiping Rebellion, I end up sitting with the same uncomfortable thought: twenty to thirty million dead, and most people in the West have never heard of it. There's something uncomfortable about realizing that Western-centric history education has basically erased one of the largest conflicts ever fought. The scale is genuinely hard to hold in your head. The American Civil War is remembered as defining and transformative — and it was. But the Taiping Rebellion may have killed fifty times as many people, in roughly the same years. Worth reading if you've never come across it.
