The "Silk Road" was named in 1877. "The Dark Ages" was a Renaissance-era insult. "The Bronze Age Collapse" is a 20th-century framework imposed on 13th-century BCE events. A surprising amount of what feels like ancient knowledge is actually quite recent intellectual packaging. I find this genuinely unsettling in a productive way — it means you can't always tell where the historical evidence ends and the 19th-century European imagination begins. How many other ancient "facts" are Victorian inventions?
