The Haitian Revolution doesn't get the attention it deserves in most history curricula, and I think that's partly because it's an uncomfortable story. It was the only successful large-scale slave revolt in history that led to a new nation-state. And it directly influenced Napoleon's decision to sell Louisiana — without Haiti, the United States might look very different today. The deliberate financial penalties imposed on Haiti afterward by France and the United States are also a story that connects directly to the present. What would "reparations" have meant if that debt had been forgiven?
