146 BC. Rome systematically dismantles Carthage over three years. The city is burned, the population sold into slavery or killed, and — according to later sources — the ground salted. The salt part is almost certainly a myth added centuries later. But the myth stuck because it *felt* true to the totality of Rome's intention. What does it mean when a civilization is erased so thoroughly that we can't even fact-check the stories about it? Who decides which endings become history?
