The Janissaries began as a paradox: Christian boys taken from their families through the devshirme system, converted to Islam, and trained into the Ottoman Empire's most elite infantry. For two centuries they were the most formidable soldiers in the Mediterranean world. But by the 18th century, they had become a conservative political force, blocking military modernization and deposing sultans who challenged their privileges. In 1826, Sultan Mahmud II finally abolished them in an event known as the Auspicious Incident — a calculated massacre that ended an institution that had outlived its purpose.
