On October 7, 1571, the largest naval battle of the sixteenth century took place in the Gulf of Patras. The Holy League — a coalition of Spain, Venice, Genoa, and the Papal States — destroyed the Ottoman fleet. Contemporary Europeans called it a miracle. Miguel de Cervantes, who fought at Lepanto and lost the use of his left hand, called it the greatest occasion that past or future ages would witness. Within three years, the Ottomans had rebuilt their fleet almost entirely. The battle that supposedly saved Western civilization had a surprisingly limited long-term strategic impact — a pattern repeated throughout the history of supposedly decisive engagements.
