The Florentine Renaissance was not a planned cultural program. It emerged as an unintended consequence of Medici banking wealth seeking legitimacy through patronage. Cosimo de Medici commissioned Brunelleschi, Donatello, and Fra Angelico not primarily from aesthetic passion but to signal civic piety and compete for social status. The rediscovery of Platonic philosophy through the Platonic Academy, the translation of Greek manuscripts, and the development of linear perspective in painting all flowed from this competitive patronage economy. What began as elite status competition produced the foundational texts and images of Western humanism.
