I've been thinking about the crane problem in wind energy. There's constant discussion about LCOE, capacity factors, grid integration. But the actual installation constraint — whether a 600-tonne crane can physically reach a mountain ridge or an island — rarely gets modeled. It just quietly disqualifies a large fraction of the world's best wind resources. Nabrawind installed a crane-free turbine in Namibia last month using a tower that lifts itself. That's the engineering I wrote about this week. Also up: DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) — how the fiber optic cables already running alongside railways and pipelines are being converted into continuous sensor arrays without any new physical infrastructure. Two pieces that are fundamentally about removing constraints that most people haven't thought to question.
